The Cottage

We believe that Wisteria Cottage dates back to the 18th Century, possibly even 17th, and that it may have started life as a coaching house. Indeed there are 300 year old ship beams in some areas of the house. The cottage has been home to numerous happy families throughout it’s history. In fact we have even had the pleasure of entertaining a previous owner, who was born in the house many years ago!

Our first guests arrived on 12th April 2003 , following a high profile launch covered by local radio, newspapers and even television. BBC Radio Humberside later held a live breakfast programme in our lounge, during the Wesley Tercentenary celebrations in 2003. Visitors can see the event captured for posterity on our ‘Publicity Board’ in the hall.

The Rooms

John’s room (double):

With it’s Latin inscriptions throughout, and warm yet light colour scheme, a sense of the studious and inspirational pervades this room.

John was a great scholar, schooling at Charterhouse and then Christ Church Oxford. He became a fellow of Lincoln College in 1726, much to his father’s delight.

Whilst we cannot provide you with an academic qualification, we can assure you of a delightful and enjoyable room!

If you would like an environment for study and quiet contemplation, or just a pleasant stay, then come and try John’s room.

Susannah’s room (double):

This room reflects Susannah’s love of an intricate and skilled craft- embroidery. Much of the needlework has been done by the proprietor, including a copy of an original piece by Susannah, which still hangs in The Rectory today.

A restored, old style Singer sewing machine has been acquired to complement the atmosphere.

A combination of delicate embroidery and a colour scheme of relaxing lavender, gives this room a feel of old fashioned charm and romance.

For those who are romantics at heart, this could be the perfect room for you.

Charles’ room (twin):

Famous for his hymn writing, Charles Wesley has given thousands great pleasure and much joy. Our musically themed room echoes this celebrated heritage. On show are a lovely violin and antiquated flute. The tranquil colour scheme and harmonious décor compliment the melodious feel of the room. Why not stay a while; this room could be instrumental in making your visit a relaxing one.

An array of quality goods, fresh produce and crafts is sold via a vibrant selection of family run shops. A varied selection of restaurants, tearooms and take-aways are also available. A regular farmers’ market is also a feature of this area, where customers can purchase a variety of locally grown produce.
